The Display of tile shown below was installed on a cement board and was left outside overnight. The moisture in the air that accumulated overnight soaked through the grout joints and then through the cement board which is why you can see the pattern of the tile from the back side of the board. Even though the display is at such a steep angle and the amount of moisture in the air was much less than a typical shower would have, you can see that without proper waterproofing, cement board itself, is NOT a waterproof board.
